Description of 2003 Survey of Small Business Finance ASCII file (for non-SAS users) September 5, 2006 (Revised November 8, 2006 to include labels) 1. General Information The ASCII version of the 2003 Survey of Small Business Finances is a comma delimited ASCII flat (rectangular) file. There is one logical record for each observation, making a total of 21200 records, plus one record at the beginning of the file that contains the variable names. The 21200 records represent 4240 firms, each of which has five implicates. A compressed version of the ASCII data set is contained in the zipped file, ssbf03.dat.Z. The maximum record length for the data set is 14483. There is a dictionary file, dict03.txt, that lists the names of the variables in the order in which they appear in the ASCII file. Listed next to the variable names variable type indicators (NUM = numeric and CHAR = character) and variable labels. NOTE: variables beginning with X do not have labels. This dictionary file can be used to generate an input list. For SAS users, the list (including character informats) can also be found in the example program at the end of this document. 2. Variable Types There are two types of variables on the data set: character and numeric. All but 8 of the 1937 variables are numeric. The majority of the numeric variables take integer values. However, those numeric variables that DO NOT take on integer values are A0_ADJUST, C_SHARE_1, C_SHARE_2, C_SHARE_3, F3_2, F3_2_LR, F6_2, F6_2_LR, FIN_WGT, L10, L12, MRL19, MRL20, and MRL21. Negative values were allowed in 20 variables. Missing Values The missing values on the ASCII data set differ from those described in the CODEBOOK. Rounding error Users of the ASCII file should be aware that there may be negligible differences between the flat file and the available SAS data set due to differences in variable lengths and rounding error. The default in SAS, when reading numeric variables from a flat file, is 8. This may differ from the SAS data set. However, these differences are largely inconsequential. A comparison between the two data sets, ASCII and SAS, shows that the maximum difference between any given variable is 0.0000000041 percent. 5. Example: Reading The ASCII Flat File Into a SAS Data set The following is an example of SAS code that can be used to do the following: import the ASCII flat file into SAS; change the missing codes in
