Broad Index of the Foreign Exchange Value of the Dollar
Note: As a result of annual revisions to the trade data, the currency weights below are no longer used in calculating the historical and current dollar index values. As of June 17, 2008, these weights have been replaced with the current weights.

Weights for the major currencies index and for the OITP (other important trading partners) index can be derived from the weights, shown here, for the broad index of the foreign exchange value of the dollar. The method used to construct the weights, described in an article in the October 1998 Federal Reserve Bulletin (69 KB PDF), has been modified twice. First, beginning with January 2001, Greece was added to the list of U.S. trading partners used to calculate the weights. This change reflects the adoption of the euro by Greece on January 1, 2001, and affects the calculation of the weights beginning in 2001 but not for previous years. Second, with the revision of January 2, 2002, agricultural exports are no longer subtracted from U.S. exports in the computation of the competitiveness weights either for the current period or past periods. This modification simplifies the calculation of the weights without changing them significantly.

The broad index and the other exchange rate indexes, as calculated by staff members of the Federal Reserve Board, are presented on the page of summary measures of the foreign exchange value of the dollar. 

Bilateral dollar exchange rates are available from the Board's H.10 (weekly) and G.5 (monthly) statistical releases.

In the table, an asterisk at the beginning of a row indicates that the currency of that country or region is included in the major currencies index. The absence of an asterisk indicates a country with a currency in the OITP index.

Components may not sum to totals or to memo items because of rounding.
