More Information about Special Issues for Military
Families
Under the Soldiers and Sailors Civil Relief Act of 1940, military personnel are exempt from paying personal property tax on vehicles they own (that is, on vehicles to which they hold the title). However, in a lease, the lessor or assignee owns the vehicle. If you are in the military and you lease a vehicle, your exemption does not apply to the leased vehicle, and you must pay personal property tax. You may want to ask about the amount of personal property tax you will have to pay and factor this cost into your decision to lease a vehicle. |
