Note. The statistics in the G.17 statistical release cover output, capacity, and capacity utilization in the industrial sector, which the Federal Reserve defines as manufacturing, mining, and electric and gas utilities. Manufacturing consists of those industries included in the North American Industry Classification System, or NAICS, manufacturing plus those industries--logging and newspaper, periodical, book, and directory publishing--that have traditionally been considered manufacturing and included in the industrial sector.

1. Data in this table also appear in the Board's G.17 (419) monthly statistical release. The latest historical revision of the industrial production index and the capacity utilization rates was released in December 2004. The recent annual revision is described in the Winter 2005 issue of the Bulletin.   Return to table

2. Monthly highs, 1978-80; monthly lows, 1982.   Return to table

3. Monthly highs, 1988-89; monthly lows, 1990-91.   Return to table

4. Capacity utilization is calculated as the ratio of the Federal Reserve's seasonally adjusted index of industrial production to the corresponding index of capacity.   Return to table
