Quality-Adjusted Price Indexes for Communications Equipment

The Federal Reserve categorizes products in the Communications Equipment industry (North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 3342) using a taxonomy featuring three levels: High-level product classes, Mid-level product classes, and Low-level product classes. This taxonomy follows industry conventions as described in Byrne and Corrado (2015) rather than the NAICS definitions. The Federal Reserve publishes detailed information on quarterly and annual produce price indexes and annual industry price indexes.

Computer Storage Equipment Price Index

The computer storage price index provides an estimate of price changes for computer storage equipment assuming that the quality of the device is unchanged. Data from IDC, a market research company specializing in information technology industries, were used to extend the previously-published matched-model quarterly price index through 2023, which was then converted to an annual index. This annual price index was first incorporated into the industrial production index for computer storage equipment at the time of the 2016 annual revision to the G.17 statistical release on industrial production and capacity utilization, which was published on April 1, 2016. The updated computer storage price index will be incorporated in the 2024 G.17 annual revision. More details on the data sources and index construction are available in a FEDS Note.

Microprocessor Price Index

A hedonic price index was developed to account for rapid performance gains in microprocessors (MPUs), the central processing units in computers. Hedonic price indexes use data on product characteristics to estimate what the change in product price would be if the quality of the product were held constant.
